Our newest Exec member, Ursula Gibbs, is testament to the fact that there’s no limit on ambition if you’re prepared to push yourself outside of your comfort zone. Here, she takes us through her career journey with the Group.
My journey with the BGL Group started my career in 2003, when I took a role as a Claims Advisor in the call centre. At the time, I couldn’t have imagined where that job would eventually take me. I never intended to be Chief Commercial Officer, but I’m naturally curious and I’ve always wanted to continue to learn, grow and enjoy what I’m doing, and that’s how I’ve ended up here.
That first role was more important to my future career than I appreciated at the time, giving me something that’s stayed with me ever since: a real understanding of our customers and what matters to them.
From there, I took every opportunity, leaning into that curiosity trait and trying new things. I moved into account management and business development, then into roles focused on partnerships, supplier development and insurance strategy across the wider BGL Group. Each step challenged me in different ways and helped me build a broader view of the business.
My move into Compare the Market marked another important chapter. Roles like Commercial Director, Trading Director and Director of Pricing gave me the chance to lead through change, develop high-performing teams and deliver real commercial impact. In 2024, I stepped into my current role, a moment I’m incredibly proud of.
More than 20 years on from my initial role with BGL, there’s a great ‘full circle’ moment. I started on the phones, talking to customers and helping them through some of their very toughest times, and now I’m leading the submission on our Consumer Duty report to the FCA, demonstrating how we continue to strive to put our customers at the centre of everything we do.
What’s shaped my journey most is being curious and staying open to opportunity. I didn’t follow a set path to the C-suite, but I’ve always been willing to take on new challenges, keep learning and work with brilliant people along the way.
That’s something I’m passionate about creating for others too. I want people to feel they can build a career here, whatever their starting point. Because my story shows that with the right support, mindset and opportunities, progression really is possible.
